Vaginal Repair in Bangkok

Multiple childbirths, aging, and pelvic prolapse can stretch and weaken the vaginal tissues over time. Vaginal repair, or vagina tightening surgery, tightens the vaginal muscles and surrounding tissues to reduce the risk of prolapse and boost sexual satisfaction.

The vagina is designed for childbirth. However, multiple vaginal deliveries can stretch the ligaments and tissues within the vaginal wall. In some cases, vaginal tears during childbirth may not heal optimally, which, if not properly repaired, can affect function and comfort over time.

Women may notice symptoms of urinary leakage, especially during coughing, lifting heavy objects, or even during everyday activity. Vaginal repair is the most definitive way to address significant vaginal laxity when conservative treatments haven’t been effective.

Who Does Vaginal Repair Help With?

Vaginal tightening procedures aren’t just about sexual pleasure. While the tightening can improve your sex life, it’s also about reducing physical symptoms. You may benefit from vaginal repair if you experience:
  • Reduced vaginal muscle tone
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Bowel symptoms related to posterior wall weakness
  • Discomfort during daily activity
Unlike other treatments like pessaries or pelvic floor exercises, the effects are long-lasting, although factors like aging and future childbirth can still affect outcomes over time.

Types of Vaginal Repair Surgery

Posterior Vaginal Repair (Minor Surgery)

A posterior vaginal repair is recommended if there is minimal damage. It focuses on the backside of the vagina, dealing with mild laxity (looseness). Often, the repair is combined with a repair of the area between the vagina and the back passage (the perineum), especially if tearing occurred.

The procedure is completed in around 1 hour and requires local anesthesia. Most patients can return home the same day. Ideal if you’re traveling to Thailand for the treatment.

Anterior and Posterior Repair (AP Repair — Major Surgery)

An AP vaginal repair is a more extensive option. It’s reserved for cases where there is substantial prolapse and laxity, requiring removal of excess tissue and intensive reconstruction and tightening of the front and back of the vaginal wall. It addresses both prolapse and urinary incontinence.

The procedure takes 2-3 hours to complete and requires general or spinal anesthesia. As such, it’s necessary to stay 1-2 days in the hospital. If you’re traveling to Thailand, plan your travel arrangements accordingly.

Vaginal Repair Procedure

Vaginal tightening can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the procedure. It can be performed either as an outpatient or inpatient, and you may need to spend 1-2 days in the hospital so we can monitor your recovery.

Consultation and Preoperative Assessment.

Our surgeons will assess vaginal laxity, pelvic floor strength, and any related symptoms such as urinary leakage or prolapse to determine whether minor or major repair is appropriate.

Anaesthesia and Surgical Preparation.

Depending on the complexity, the procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia. The treatment area is prepared, and the surgeon maps the areas requiring repair.

Tissue Removal and Vaginal Wall Reconstruction.

Excess or stretched vaginal tissue is carefully removed. The underlying muscles are then tightened and repositioned to restore structure and support within the vaginal canal.

Suturing, Recovery, and Discharge.

The area is closed using dissolvable sutures. After a short monitoring period, patients undergoing minor surgery can return home the same day, while major procedures may require a short hospital stay.

Preparing for Vaginal Repair Surgery

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will let you know how to prepare for your surgery. If you’re traveling to Thailand, it’s best to give yourself a day beforehand to adjust and get ready. You will need to:

  • Avoid food and drink for 6 hours prior
  • Stop blood-thinning medications (if advised)
  • Inform the doctor of medical conditions
  • Schedule your surgery outside your menstrual period

Recovery and Aftercare

After the procedure, it’s normal to have swelling, bruising, and discomfort. There may even be temporary urinary difficulty. Everyone heals differently, but you should notice a gradual improvement over 1-2 weeks as the swelling subsides.

If the pain continues or there’s any discharge, speak to your clinician immediately. Infections are rare, but they must be treated straight away.

You’ll need to avoid heavy lifting for approximately 2 weeks and refrain from sexual activity for 4 weeks. Your surgeon will let you know how to look after the wound, and if there’s anything you should eat or drink to help with recovery.

Is Vaginal Repair Right for You?

Vaginal repair isn’t for everyone. If you’ve got mild urinary incontinence, it’s best to try pelvic floor exercises first. But if symptoms persist or worsen, you might consider a repair. It’s best for:
  • Vaginal laxity after childbirth
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Mild to moderate prolapse
You’ll need a detailed clinical assessment by one of our clinicians before the procedure. They’ll discuss your symptoms and medical history to ensure it’s right for you.
