What Are the Risk Factors for Gynecomastia?
Medical conditions and lifestyle factors that can contribute to gynecomastia include:
- Anabolic steroids use
- Illegal drug use (such as marijuana, heroin)
- Obesity
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Testicular cancer
- Thyroid disorder
- Adrenal gland tumors
Can Gynecomastia Go Away On Its Own?
First of all, it’s important to try and understand the nature of the condition. Adult gynecomastia can vary in severity and may have different underlying causes. If your gynecomastia is recent, it might be related to factors such as medication use or weight gain. In such cases, the condition may respond to lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise, or changing medications.
If your gynecomastia has been persistent (usually more than a year) and is causing discomfort, pain, or psychological distress, surgical intervention might be a more effective solution. In chronic cases, especially where there is excess fibrous tissue, surgery is often the most reliable way to achieve a significant and lasting improvement.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Painful?
The surgery is performed under either local or general anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. It is normal for your chest to feel sore after the anesthetic wears off and for a few days afterwards.
Most patients describe this as mild discomfort rather than severe pain and it can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication if needed. Some patients experience moderate tenderness in their chest for up to 2 weeks post-surgery, but most feel back to normal within 4–6 weeks depending on how quickly they heal.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Safe?
Will I Have a Scar After Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery, like any surgical procedure, typically results in some form of scarring, but these are usually well hidden. The extent and visibility of scarring also varies based on the surgical technique used.
In the excision technique, the excess breast gland tissue is removed through a small incision made under the areola. The scar lines are concealed by the body’s natural contours and will not be very noticeable once healed.
The liposuction technique uses very small incisions and therefore the extent of scarring will be minimal.
How Long Does It Take to Recover From Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery under local anesthesia is an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to go home the same day. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery. If your surgery is performed under general anesthesia, you may need to spend 1-2 nights in hospital for monitoring.
Full recovery typically takes 4-6 weeks. You’ll need to take 1-2 weeks off work and avoid any strenuous activity. Wearing a compression garment is recommended for the first 2-3 weeks to minimize swelling and to help the postoperative recovery. Most people will be able to return to exercise after 4 weeks, although it’s important to listen to your body and only gradually increase the intensity of exercise over time.
