Facelift Recovery Tips
Healing from surgery isn’t always as simple as just rest and recovery. After a facelift, the swelling, bruising, and discomfort can feel endless. Simple things like walking around, washing, or even getting a good night’s sleep can become a struggle. For many, the hardest part is the waiting. Every day feels like a waiting game until you can look in the mirror and see the results you were hoping for.
A common question we get from patients is, “What can I do to help me recover faster?” It’s an excellent question, and there are definitely a few different things that can support a smooth recovery. However, it’s important to first understand what the typical recovery process looks like.
Recovery After Facelift
Some swelling and bruising is completely normal after surgery. This typically subsides within 2 to 4 weeks, but the exact timeline can vary depending on the type of facelift you’ve had, the anaesthetic used, and other factors. And of course every person is different, so while we can give a general idea, it’s hard to say exactly how long it will take.
Genetics always plays a part in healing, and this is something we can’t change. However, a healthy lifestyle can help your body recover better. Eating a nutrient-rich diet and getting enough protein is important. Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause inflammation and should be avoided. Smoking makes it harder for blood to carry oxygen to your cells, which slows down healing. That’s why it’s important to avoid smoking for at least four weeks after surgery. Age is also a factor. Younger people tend to have less swelling and bruising and heal faster in general.
What You Can Do To recover Faster
Rest
In the first few weeks after surgery, it’s important to rest, take it easy and be kind to yourself. You should rest at home and avoid any physical activity that could raise your blood pressure. This includes both exercise and emotionally stressful situations, as stress can also increase blood pressure. Keeping your blood pressure low can help reduce swelling and bruising, leading to a smoother recovery.
When planning your surgery, make sure to choose a time when you won’t have any social events or obligations in the following few weeks. Many people are able to resume social activities and go back to work after about two weeks, but rest should be the priority during the early stages of recovery. Take it slow, and avoid anything that could put unnecessary strain on your body.
Cold Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
All surgeries result in wounds (incisions) that need time to heal. Facelift surgery is no different. Oxygen is essential for repairing damaged tissue, and oxygen therapy has been found to be especially effective in promoting recovery and reducing complications. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a powerful recovery tool that helps surgical patients heal faster and with fewer issues. HBOT works by delivering high levels of oxygen at increased pressure, allowing your body to carry significantly more oxygen to damaged tissues. This oxygen-rich environment supports recovery in several ways. First, it can reduce swelling and bruising. Second, it stimulates collagen production, which helps improve scar healing. It also speeds up tissue repair and helps fight off potential infections that could delay recovery.
We are seeing faster healing and fewer infections in patients who undergo HBOT after surgery, and we strongly recommend it to all our facelift patients. Treatment involves sitting or lying in a chamber and breathing concentrated oxygen, which allows your lungs to absorb more oxygen than they would under normal conditions. HBOT usually begins a few days after surgery, with each session lasting 60 to 90 minutes. Many patients notice an improvement in overall well-being after just one session, though multiple sessions may be needed for the best results.

Other Things You Can Do to Support Recovery
There are a few additional steps you can take to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications:
- Wear sun protection (SPF 30 or higher) when going outside
- Avoid smoking and alcohol during the early recovery period
- Sleep with your head elevated
- Avoid exercise for at least three weeks
After your facelift, your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions. It’s important to follow these carefully. You should also prepare in advance to make the recovery process smoother. The first few days tend to be the most challenging, so make sure you have ice packs ready and easily accessible. Have extra pillows ready to help you sleep with your head elevated.
Finally, there is no single action that guarantees a faster recovery, but combining these steps can make a big difference. The more of these recommendations you follow, the smoother and quicker your recovery is likely to be.
