Eyelid Surgery in Bangkok, Thailand

Rejuvenating eye surgery in Bangkok, Thailand performed by expert plastic surgeons.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, aims to improve the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The skin around the eyes is particularly thin and delicate, which is why it often shows signs of ageing earlier than other areas of the face. Concerns such as drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, wrinkles, and a tired or heavy appearance commonly affect the overall facial balance and youthful appearance, leading many patients to seek treatment.

Eyelid surgery in Thailand is a popular option for both local and international patients due to the country’s advanced medical facilities, experienced surgeons, and structured approach to facial aesthetics. Whether performed for cosmetic enhancement or functional improvement, blepharoplasty aims to restore a more refreshed, and youthful appearance while maintaining natural-looking results and facial harmony.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Indications for Upper Eyelid Surgery

  • Excess or sagging skin that creates a hooded appearance
  • Drooping eyelids that make the eyes look tired or heavy
  • Weakening of the eyelid muscles affecting eye openness
  • Puffiness caused by excess fat deposits in the upper eyelids
  • Upper eyelid skin partially obstructing the field of vision
  • Poorly defined eyelid crease or absence of a natural crease (single eyelid)
  • Desire for a more balanced, defined, and refreshed eye contour
  • Concerns based on visible changes rather than age alone

Indications for Lower Eyelid Surgery

  • Prominent under-eye bags caused by protruding fat deposits
  • A tired or aged appearance due to puffiness under the eyes
  • Loose or sagging skin in the lower eyelid area
  • Fine lines and wrinkles beneath the eyes
  • Hollowing or dark shadows under the eyes
  • Uneven contours or bulges in the lower eyelids
  • Limited improvement from non-surgical treatments
  • Desire for smoother transitions and a fresher, more natural under-eye appearance

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia may be used depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference. The technique chosen depends on whether the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both are being treated.

For upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes a precise incision along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This allows excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat to be removed or repositioned, with the scar hidden within the fold.

Lower blepharoplasty can be performed using a few different approaches:

  • A subciliary incision is made just below the lash line when both excess skin and fat need correction.
  • A transconjunctival approach is used when only fat needs to be addressed, with the incision placed inside the eyelid so no external scar is visible.
  • In some cases, laser techniques may be used to reduce bleeding and swelling while improving precision.

The procedure typically takes one to two hours, depending on complexity. Most patients can return home the same day, although you may need to stay overnight for monitoring if general anaesthesia is used.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

Some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal in the early days, particularly because the skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive. With proper aftercare and rest, these effects gradually improve as healing progresses.

If stitches are used, they are usually removed within five to seven days. Many patients feel ready to return to light, non-strenuous activities within one to two weeks. While early improvements are visible fairly quickly, the final results continue to refine over the following months as any remaining swelling fully subsides.

Immediate Post-Surgery Period (First 24–48 Hours)

The first two days after eyelid surgery are an important part of the recovery process. Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness around the eyes are common during this period. Some patients may also experience mild pain, light sensitivity, or watery or dry eyes.

Cold compresses applied at short intervals can help reduce swelling and bruising. Keeping your head elevated, including while sleeping, is also recommended to minimise fluid buildup around the eyes. Your surgeon may prescribe pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication, or ointments to support healing and reduce discomfort.

Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely is essential at this stage. This typically includes gentle cleaning of the surgical area, using prescribed eye drops or ointments, and avoiding rubbing or touching the eyes.

First Week of Recovery

During the first week, swelling and bruising gradually begin to improve, although they may still be noticeable. Stitches, if used, are usually removed within five to seven days. It is normal to experience dryness, itching, or a tight sensation around the upper and lower eyelids during this time.

Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending should be avoided, as these can increase swelling. Rest is important, and most patients are advised to stay home and allow their body to heal. If you need to go outdoors, wearing dark sunglasses can help protect the eyes from sunlight, wind, and dust.

Second Week of Recovery

By the second week, most visible swelling and bruising have significantly reduced. Many patients feel comfortable returning to light, non-strenuous activities and social engagements at this stage. Any remaining swelling is usually mild and continues to improve over time.

Light activities such as walking are generally safe, but intense exercise should still be avoided unless your surgeon confirms it is appropriate. Continued protection from direct sunlight is important, as the healing skin remains sensitive.

Follow-up appointments during this period allow your surgeon to monitor healing and advise when normal routines can be fully resumed.

Long-Term Recovery

Although early improvements are visible within the first few weeks, final results develop gradually over the following months. Minor residual swelling settles over time, allowing the eyelid contours to fully refine. Scars typically fade and become less noticeable as healing progresses.

Post-Operative Care After Eyelid Surgery

Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully plays a big role in how smoothly you heal and how good your final results look. In the first few days, gentle cold compresses can help reduce swelling and ease any discomfort. Resting with your head slightly elevated, taking a break from strenuous activities, and wearing sunglasses outdoors will also support your recovery.

You’ll be asked to keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid rubbing your eyes, and wait before using eye makeup until your surgeon gives the go-ahead. It’s also best to avoid smoking and alcohol during the early healing period, as they can slow recovery. Attending your follow-up appointments allows your surgeon to check your progress and address any questions or concerns along the way.

With the right care and realistic expectations, eyelid surgery in Thailand can offer long-lasting results, helping you look brighter and more refreshed while keeping your eyes looking natural and like yourself.
