Combining Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery - What To Expect
Can I Combine a Facelift with a Neck Lift?
Absolutely. And in many cases, it’s actually recommended. A facelift focuses on the mid-to-lower face. It lifts sagging cheeks, improves jowls, and smooths wrinkles around the mouth. A neck lift targets the area under the chin, tightening loose skin, removing excess fat, and correcting muscle bands that cause the look of a “turkey neck.”
Because the face and neck age together, treating both areas in one procedure often gives better, more natural-looking results. It allows us to create a smoother transition from the jawline to the neck, which helps avoid the mismatch that can happen when only one area is addressed. For many patients, combining the two leads to more balanced facial contours and a younger, more refreshed overall appearance.
Why Combine the Two?
A facelift improves the mid-to-lower face. It lifts sagging cheeks, smooths deep lines like nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and helps define the jawline. A neck lift focuses on the area under the chin. It removes excess fat, tightens loose skin, and corrects muscle banding, which is what creates the appearance of a “turkey neck.”
When only one area is treated, the contrast between the face and neck can become more noticeable. By combining both procedures, we can create a smoother transition between these areas. This allows for more even, natural-looking results.
Doing both at once also helps us address multiple concerns in a single surgery. We can lift the cheeks, sharpen the jawline, tighten the neck, and reduce the appearance of jowls or a double chin. The result is a more youthful, proportionate look that restores definition across the entire lower face and neck.
What to Expect After Surgery
After surgery, swelling and bruising are normal. These are usually most noticeable in the first few days and can last up to two weeks. You may also experience temporary numbness or slight muscle weakness in parts of the face or neck. That usually improves on its own over a few months.
The most important thing during recovery is to protect the healing tissue. Avoid all nicotine products, including vape pens. Nicotine restricts blood flow and can increase the risk of skin loss. Keep your head elevated, even when sleeping, to reduce swelling. Try to sleep without a pillow or with your neck gently extended. This helps the skin along the neck tighten properly.
Don’t put ice on your face. It might seem like a good way to reduce swelling, but cold can reduce blood supply to the skin and slow healing.
You’ll need to keep the incision areas clean and moist. Use warm soapy water to clean them gently, then apply a thin layer of ointment like Aquaphor or Bacitracin. Sutures in front of the ears or along the hairline are usually removed in 5 to 7 days. Sutures behind the ears may dissolve on their own, while staples in the hairline are removed after 10 to 14 days.
Most people feel ready to return to work or social activities after about two weeks. If any bruising remains, it can usually be covered with makeup. You can resume light exercise after a week, and swimming after three weeks if healing is going well.
What Are the Risks?
All surgery carries some risk. With face and neck lifts, the main things to watch for include swelling that appears suddenly or only on one side, as that may signal a hematoma. If your surgical drains fill rapidly with blood or fluid, contact your doctor.
Other warning signs include persistent nausea, fever, spreading redness around an incision, or eye symptoms like worsening pain or double vision. These are not common, but if they happen, it’s important to reach out to your surgeon.
